World2XPlane model library.
« on: September 02, 2014, 10:12:47 am »

Hello all!

With permission from tonywob, i'm porting the model library from World2XPlane into Outerra. :)
This morning I started the conversion, and I was able to successfully port 900 models already!

900!!?? How the frack did you do that?

Uhmmm..... good job!

Outerra is probably going to need some sort of preview object screen eventually, so we aren't just clicking at a name to see what appears.  ;D

I'll go ahead and post this at Avsim as well though I'm starting to feel like all the posts are mine!

Levi, do you really live in our spacetime realm

Just wow, I was expecting that you will start working on this library at some point but 900 in a row ! ;D. I will be back at work on my scenes in one week, this is gonna be good!
Awesome work mate, and thanks to tonywob for sharing this with us !

Well, looks like the lack of buildings won't be a problem anymore! Great work!

I notice that a few of the models lack foundations, so they don't sit in the ground, but float.
As a general rule, I've always added deep foundations, 2 meters, to ensure the object sits well.

It's OVER 900!!!

1.5 megs for 900 models. You can guess the quality of the models!

Yeah until there is a file browser I think I am uninstalling that pack. My scroll bar is SO SMALL.

As a general rule, I've always added deep foundations, 2 meters, to ensure the object sits well.

Some of the models don't and some do. There are several authors and contributors. Most of the non-generic ones should have foundations (At least all the ones I added, and Blacky75 added do). Some others are donated from other projects and don't include foundations. The Uwespeed buildings (which have been converted here) were donated by a user Uwespeed and were generated by a program I believe.

It's OVER 900!!!

Yeah until there is a file browser I think I am uninstalling that pack. My scroll bar is SO SMALL.

Couple of things worth noting, firstly a large portion of the buildings all share the same texture sheets, and secondly they are low resolution and low-poly as they are for a flight simulator (X-Plane). They will not look too good close up, but they have been designed this way.

The full library also contains higher quality regional buildings for different countries such as the UK, Germany, Poland, Switzerland and the Netherlands. The UK library is currently the biggest and the library continues to grow

How I did it? Well, just moving my fingers like Superman during about six hours without a break. lol ;D

Yeah we'll definitely need an improved file browser for this amount of models...

Thank you for posting this to Avsim. I hadn't time to do so, and not even to reply on this topic... I was a bit busy just after creating this thread. :P

Yeah, I do live in our spacetime realm lol. It's just about setting some standards, and follow them, with boost activated :D ;D

Thanks, and have fun populating the world :D

Thank you tonywob!
I think that the conversion would have been quicker if I had the original scene files instead of XPlane .obj file format. With the .obj files, I have to pass them trough:
  • Blender 2.49 (the importer only works with this version...)
  • Blender 2.71(here I manually recalculate the normal directions for each model!)
  • Autodesk 3ds Max 2015(configuring the materials and smoothing groups, then exporting for Outerra)
  • Outerrra(importing...).
But I don't think it's possible to have the scene files because it seem that some are exported from SketchUp, some with Blender 2.49, others with Blender 2.70, and of course, many are from different authors... So I guess I'll keep doing it this way, right? :D

Unfortunately many of the original Blender or Sketchup models weren't checked in to github for size, etc..

However, you can import the models straight into Sketchup and then export them to 3DS skipping the Blender part. I've done this on some occasions when I've wanted to reuse or resize a model. The plugin for Blender still can't import the models which is a bit of a pain.

Is there a specification for the 3D format for Outerra, maybe we can just automate the lot in one go using the same texture sheets?

It occurs that if very many are using the same texture sheets, that would make it a lot less difficult if someone decided to replace those textures with something higher resolution.......?
