converting models from x plane!

I noticed that several models of air present in outerra were converted from x plane.
This does not seem to happen to FSX, but I could be wrong, however, the question is: Is there any facility to convert models from x plane? and if you like? how you extract? you have to redo all the animations, or there is some compatibility ??

Animations are script-redone, doe the planes where imported on a demand to the autor, to free it for this purpose (not sure if copyright is on all the models, but it is always nice to ask the creators for permition, after all theyr hard work on it. Im also sure, they are glad to know, theyr project ends somewhere else too). Levi did quite a good job there indeed.

With regard to copyright we agree. So between a model extracted from FSX or xp (which program for xp?) Does not change anything !! ?? :)

..oh forgot. He probably got the model file (aether 3DSMax of Blender) from them autors.

Doe i know there are some plug-ins for that purpose quite some time .. :

JSBSim is already supported, doe cockpit stuff, flaps and gear animations have to be in the javascript file. (just look up some existing better OT planes in theyr scripts (Alt + E in-game and in vehicle)). Think, most of the stuff can be seen well from it, the rest - PM Levi or the Shavrov creator for details. -- so, yes, you have to change a few stuff. Also, the plugin might not convert materials properly (but you would have still to set them right after importing to OT in the .mtl file). The imported models (as you see in vid) will have some FSX special stuff (collision meshes, interaction meshes/points specific to FSX etc.) that you should delete there, so you have to check the model trough properly.

Else ... some things have to hit OT still to make planes a better thing in OT and a proper simulation (just like dden wrote ya in the Grumman topic)

I have contact with a lot of freeware modelers for FSX, if I had any idea how to convert to Outerra I would ask.  If you are at all familiar with Project Opensky or Skyspirit I know a majority of those guys.

  ... the only sim i ever did in full extent was the LOMAC ( i kinda newer liked to fly anything else than the beloved SU-25 of mine  ;D ), so i didnt know them. They have a really impressive Boeing collection ! Maybe Levi would like to get his hands on those.
Still, not sure when any broadening in the sim parts for OT will be there, so detailed internal cockpit systems would be a no go at this moment. 

P.S.: Are those guys still rolling ? Saw a post of them OpenSky project ending at august 2012 ?

Wow! Im not talking about that, any way! Flightgear is for free (as far as I know) and there tons of free models for download. And of course we should ask permission to the author first... always.

However let's look at the word 'free'...

Clearly your emphasis is on money for the term free... But my point would be that if you take model from FG then by its terms any improvements you make you have to make available back to FG..

So that's a lifetime commitment.

If you're up for that, look at the Ask 13, it's an FG glider

It's just the GPL, which is satisfied by releasing any derivative works under the GPL as well, hardly a huge burden. Not sure what you mean by "lifetime commitment".

Ok....well that's just the 3d meshes, the 2d textures and if a jsbsim FDM the flight model....

Any improvements made here would need to be given back...

 ... well, theyr models are a top-notch. (off course not only the models themselves) Ill be surprised if they give away those models even after a half century from now. ;D Deserve all the support by buying them product. Specially if they really want to include all the tons of full-clicks planes people on the forums like them to do.

No, I think you're misunderstanding the GPL. The GPL doesn't require that you actively give contributions back to upstream, only that any distribution of derived works also be licensed under the GPL.

If I take some GPL work, change it, post it online under the GPL license, I've fulfilled the terms of the GPL; upstream need never be aware of it. (Also, if I take some GPL work, change it, and never distribute it publicly my changes need not even be made available). The GPL forcing people to "give back" is just a metaphor in the sense that if upstream wants the changes they're available for use.

If people are looking for models to use FlightGear seems like a great choice specifically because of how it's licensed.
