API almost ready?
« on: August 11, 2014, 05:58:07 pm »

Hello, so is the API almost ready to release this as a public engine? I'm making a game and want to use the Outerra engine for it(if possible) and we haven;t started development due to we not having a good phys engine and graphics engine and stuff like that. Then when browsing I found you guys and wanted to use this engine only to find out Its not released yet. So if possible could you give me a estimate of time before it will be released?!?

thanks,
     Drew

Nope, it's still a long way off until the engine can be used by third party developers directly. Lots of engine features, tools and documentation are still missing.
Right now it only works with our direct participation and mostly for some special (simulation) projects, that can cope with its alpha state and where it's easier to add features they need, since they usually do not need a full blown game engine.

Yeah being able to license Outerra is an exciting possibility. I'm currently developing with Unity, which is great. Their coding workflow and animation tools are stellar. Unity however is really not meant to scale to this level of size. I'd certainly be very interested in translating my game over to Outerra.

Out of interest, how much do you charge for that?

It's always evaluated and agreed upon individually (and under NDA), but imagine business rates for custom development and dedicated support.

It's not open source, but the plan is to have an indie-friendly license for games on the OT world platform in the end.

Do you have a estimate on how log it will be until the engine's API will be ready?

Not before there's a game/sim released with it first, necessary to prove the engine and to have all essential game engine components developed in the process - many of which are still missing or in unstable state.

What is the best way to apply to develop an API for the OT engine? That is, to use it for specific sim applications.

The engine is not yet ready for commercial use by third party developers, so at the moment we are only licensing it to projects on which we are participating directly, with the exception of some simple cases. Usually developers email us with project description and requirements/plans, but only a tiny percentage of them has all the necessary components resolved - realistic funding, an experienced dev team etc.
