Importing Entire Cities

Hey guys, would it be possible to import a city skyline model like these?  http://www.3dcadbrowser.com/download.aspx?3dmodel=31573 

As I am a Puget Sound Native and both Seattle and Tacoma are available, it would be very interesting to get these into Outerra.  If so what, would be the best format to order download them in for a good successful import?  -Woog

It should be possible... I would download it for Blender, but if you have Max license, would work too... There is a direct .collada download, but you can't be sure about the scale.

Placing the city would be challenging, because is not easy to handle big objects (not sure with the new release).

Also you'll need to check how well optimized is it... Don't think it have LODs, but just for testing should work o.k.

Using a single model may seems simple, but it will in fact make things more complex. There is a big chance that some of these buildings will be partially under the ground, especially if the model was made on a flat plane. It's also a complex model, with mesh and texture for the terrain (not useful at all in Outerra) and you can expect a larger performances hit than with singles buildings.

You can download the .fbx version and test it within the importer, it will give you a good idea of the result :)

The textures would need to be customized anyway.  I've noticed that they did some kind of odd texture wrap on some buildings, others had no texture at all on certain sides.  If possible, I would break it up to have individually placed buildings.  The various cityscape downloads state 300 or more individual objects.

The homepage of Outerra states: "Vector data are supported as well, with ability to define roads that naturally and seamlessly fit on the terrain, by adjusting the adjacent ground and refining it by the fractals.  Vector data can be also used to define artificial regions with custom land type, such as fields or pastures. As a side effect of the universal fractal refinement process it will be also possible to have the artificial areas slowly degrade and return the land to its natural state." 

Are these features that will be implemented later? 

Also, if a custom terrain elevation mesh were compiled as a model, then textured with satellite imagery, could it not then be imported into Outerra as a model?    -Woog
