non-hmd stereoscopic modes not working

With a GTX 1080 and use_hmd = false in eng.cfg, every combination of stereoscopic and graphics settings I can think to try just result in a blank white screen when I enable stereoscopic mode with alt + semicolon. GPU usage goes up, so something is attempting to render, but no image ever materializes.
