Getting terrain material properties by raycasting ?

Since with vehicles it is possible to get material properties of the terrain (such as the type of terrain...sand, concrete, grass..etc) through the wheel material property I wondered if this is possible also through raycasting. That would be very useful indeed for lots of things. For example AI vehicles..or for enhancing terrain dependant world sounds.
