It seems that the full cvd.zip is unavailable. The Google account has been maxed out for the day. Could someone upload it to Mega, or make a torrent out of it?

Thank you so much!

Since it's in the otx format, will I be able to install it in Demo mode?

Yes, it should work in demo as well. OTX is technically a zip with the right structure, nothing fancy.

Popping
« Reply #140 on: March 07, 2014, 06:18:22 am »

Hello.

Is this normal?

I have the entire planet downloaded and installed in a ram disk that can read at about 4000MB/s (way above the fastest SSD) and yet, when I turn around the camera I see many things popping up like it was a hard drive reading really slowly.

So I wonder if this is happening to all of you or is it something wrong in my PC.

This is the video to show you what I mean.

That's not loading from disk at all, it's the speed at which the terrain generator produces terrain meshes if your terrain cache (on the GPU) is not large enough. You can help it by boosting the limit-fractal value in the terrain config.

Thank you cameni.

That didn't make any difference apparently to the "popping" issue.

I don't know what does what in the terrain menu so I just said fuck it, and maxed out the sliders to the right to find out if any make a visual change to that "popping up" thing I don't like. They certainly make the computer to run slower, but the aestetics look very similar to me.

But the "Terrain quality metrics" resolution did a big difference on the distance at which the game renders the terrain. So I did another video so you can see What I mean.

So now that I have every slider to the right but still looking like the objets are rendered very close to the camera, is there a way to make the terrain quality look the best at a longer distance? And I mean far enough that I can't see anything popping up like that?

Thanks for you support, I love Outerra.  ;D

One thing is popping when you turn, that's the cache problem. Another is the popping of the rocks when you move - that's the problem of missing smooth terrain transitions between terrain levels. Also, for higher perf graphics cards there will be an option to boost the terrain tesselation, that will help with the small rocks popping in.

Btw trying to putting every slider to the right is not a good idea, some combinations will actually make it worse :)

Do you mean worse in aestetics or worse in performance only?
I just try to find the way to make the engine render things at the longest distance from the camera.
Can you give me that combination if you know it please?

It can make it worse in both, because you can run out off cache and terrain will stop refining in places etc.
Terrain quality affects the overall resolution of the terrain, but some things (like the rocks) aren't currently included in the quality metrics, so they aren't affected as they should.

There's nothing more you can do about it now, but there will be more options and enhancements implemented for a better quality soon. We'll be probably doing a demo at a CG movie conference, so we have to enhance that part ;)
