minimizing the amount of tree pop-in
« on: March 31, 2012, 12:20:11 am »

Is there any particular setting or combination of settings that would help distant trees render with less visible pop-in?

I noticed setting the textures to 1080p greatly helps with this, but the performance cost is way too high. And I'm okay with how terrain geometry fades in because its often only mildly noticeable, but tree rendering really stands out when going from "bare mountainside to suddenly, TREES EVERYWHERE".

Would reducing the amount/density of trees help? Like render way less trees, but render them further kind of thing? Are there any other combinations of settings I should be aware of?

Keep up the great work Cameni & co.

There is a tree quality setting, but it's not of much help here because the trees are tied to a particular terrain level that must exist, so it depends on the terrain quality. Usually 720p suffices though.

There's not much else that can be done about it at the moment, unless the internal mechanism is changed.

Thanks for the insight, duly noted.

EDIT:

This is unrelated, but I figure since I have your attention I should bring it forward.
I've noticed that during UFO flight the speed can get pushed into negative values, and without an OSD, it can be frustrating to bring back to normal. Is there any way we could potentially get an OSD for the current speed value, and possibly the ability to map speed up + speed down to the scroll wheel?

And maybe limit the speed to values greater than 0?

To negative values? Hmm, the speed coefficient k transforms to speed multiplier as 2k, it won't produce a negative value, this way.

Yes it will be on the OSD, and mapped to the scroll wheel too. There's some problem with the scroll wheel handling at the moment though.

Great, I look forward to it- thanks.

re: negative speed

I had a problem the other night where after slowing down a whole bunch in UFO mode, my speed seemed to be "stuck" at 0, and no amount of mashing speed up would get me going again, even after restarting the engine. I ended up taking a look at world.cfg, and changing the value of "ufo-speed" from a negative value (-200something), back to a positive one- which solved the problem.

that's why I brought it up :)

And sorry, one last thing-

Is there any way to increase the maximum speed (currently 200000m/s)?

After finally getting all that elevation data, I wouldn't mind blasting around the earth super fast.

That limit was put in place to keep players from loading a ton of data all at once. It use to be 50KM/s but that was REALLY slow.

Lol. 50,000 meters per second was too slow.

Ya, that's exactly what I figured...

For those of us lucky enough to have completed the download, is there any way to unlock it?

It's hardcoded in at the moment.

For such speeds ... should I add a compressed-plasma effect? :D
