Bug reporting feature
« on: April 10, 2012, 10:32:14 pm »

Obviously there are a lot of bugs in the engine, so to help out, i thought it would be a great idea to have a "report a bug" button.

When users see or experience a bug or glitch in the engine they can simply hit the button, type a description of what happened, then when they click send, it gathers game information (e.g., coordinates, previous in-game keystrokes, location visited, anything that could help determine the cause of the bug) and sends it straight to the devs or whoever would be in charge of working out the problems.

The community is one of the most valuable resources for development and this feature will help the community feel more a part of the game or engine, and will most likely make a better, smoother experience. The community has the ability to find way more things than the devs could ever simply because the community has more people. So i feel adding this "button" will have an immensely positive impact on the overall development of Outerra.

 :)

A similar mechanism works for the crash reporting, and we could also reuse the same back-end for such bug reporting.

But the disadvantage (for us) is that we are often flooded with reports of the same issue - it doesn't motivate people to look if the issue was already reported. It would be best to connect it to a bug reporting web page where people could look it up, categorize and +1 it. And the location and logs would get filled in automatically.

Does that mean we can expect to see a "Bugs" section in the forums in the near future?

Probably rather a page tied to a bug reporting sw like Trac.
For now just use this forum.

Having a bug tracker would be really useful, to check what's the status of reported bug. Maybe Mantis? It's simple and easy to use.
