Flight Simulator Game Proposal
« on: April 22, 2013, 07:23:08 pm »

I have been dreaming of making my own Ultra Realistic Flight Simulator for quite some time now and I think the Outerra Engine could do it. The game would be Blade Element Theory based much like X-Plane is. The only problem is I only know some VB and no C++ or C+. I  do however have a suggestion name for the game but that would all depend on if this group takes off & weather the group would approve of it or not.

What We Would Need To Get This Project Started

UI Concept Designer - (ME) I Can Make Concept UI Through Visual Basic
Programmer - For implementing the Blade Element Theory aspect & creating the User Interfaces
3D Designer - For Creating The Aircraft & other 3D Objects
Graphics Artist - For Paint Jobs of Aircraft Created

Is there anyone out there who is interested in helping me bring this Open Source project to life?

If interested hit me up through Private Message leaving your E-mail address so I can contact you or by saying you would like to be part of the project through this thread.

Thanks.

I would propose the same thing where I can sit around conceptualizing a reboot of the Interstate76 series. All I need is everyone else that can actually model and code and do voice acting. God I miss that game.

Personally I think to start gathering flightsim community Outerra needs plugin API, and somebody could be able to write a plugin which will be using airport and navaid databases to make generated runways/taxiways and airport buildings. JSBSim physics of OT is not very developer friendly but still good enough to be used for flightsims. I'd prefer X-Plane one or YASim kind of physics myself, but that could be solved with plugins too I guess, for now JSBSim is OK. Community will be able to make descent aircraft addons after that, and some OT improvements/tweaks, like controlled emission textures, ability to make instruments for glass cockpits (controlled texture blending probably?), clickable cockpit elements etc.

And of course we need weather simulation (perhaps could be done with plugins too) to call Outerra a flightsim.

I think that too only should be decided what can be made for kind of Flysim. I, personally, like the air-screws airplanes, from 1930 to 1950 been developed. Hence, I have many original documents, Blueprints from works of different airplane companies accumulatedly and can help with it. Otherwise I am Graphics Artist and  knows Photoshop a lot since approx 13years, so can help with texturing.Think, however, that should be started too only with small things. As well, for example, with different ones take from hangar, tents, houses, airfield devices etc.If my help use, they can write to me by PM.

Outerra is a pretty good platform to use as a flight simulator for many reasons but the big issue is that it is in development (alpha) and even though we know it has potential for a flight sim we do not know the full scale of what it can offer. This could be seen as both an optimistic or pessimistic statement.

It is about having the right resources to do the job in full and think that banding together is a great thing (look at Flight Gear and the vision behind that). The big thing is that the engine is at a stage of development whereby one can see what the potential is but we can also consider the fact that we do not know what tech will be added ontop outside of Brano's historical dialogue.

Without specifying the different resources (people) needed for a flight sim platform I can say that the actual data is out there and available and i'm sure time is no issue for those wanting to be able to implement the data in some form, but, there needs to be a connector to be able to commence such an undertaking as well as Brano's continued support to work with ongoing development in terms of both documentation and active support which i'm sure will be available at some point in time but given his heavy workload at present to meet his own deadlines I'm sure this will not be available right now.

I think though, that a flight simulator is inevitable eventually because of the allowances the engine will make on such a platform as, by its very design, it displays all the traits of a good flight simulation product in that it is an open world unconstrained solution or at least to say it is changeable developmentally at this point in time and as long as there is an algorithm to implement maintaining compliance for current hardware then I'm sure Brano will at least consider looking at ideas.

I would say keep these ideas locked in and any 3rd party development strategies on the boiler as I'm sure that something useful could come of them down the track. I for one am excited to see the potential of OT and look forward to what OT will offer. I just think at this point in time OT needs to mature to at least a Beta stage to start to see the fruits of it's capabilities.

P.s.. Brano, mouse control for the current aircraft would be great (just as in the flight mode) to be able to control the aircraft without a joystick or yoke.  ;) ;)

My two cents.

Cheers,

K

The time to OT being "rife" can be only filled whyte modeling a whole LOT of aircraft.  ;D ... first to make Su-25 /-25UB /-25T or Buran whyte full-clic cockpit gets a week-trip trough High Tatra mountains ! : ;)

I would like to fly the NASA space shuttle and the Buran space shuttle in outerra, and I would also like to fly the Mig-25 Foxbat in outerra! Thanks!

What needs to happen is a way to convert FSX .cfg files, the texture, effects, sounds, and so on folder into something that Outerra can use.
There is so much freeware for FSX, that you could take one of each and fill the world entirely with no copies, depending on how you define 'fill'. It's all 'free' (I guess you'd need some hardworking chappie to email the 'owners' asking for their permission), and it already exists.
There would have to be a modelling team perhaps that improves the textures to Outerra standards (full HD close-up, not FSX-standard), but once there's an easy importer, one person can import then upload the entirety of the world's aircraft.
I can't program, so alas, my (poor) explanation is all I can give :P
