[Free] Outerra Mods Hosting
« on: September 20, 2013, 04:42:29 am »

Hello,

I really like the mods made by the community but sometimes the hostings delete the files or the users upload them on some annoying hostings with timers because they don't know where to upload them, therefore I used AjaXplorer to create a way for the community to upload their creations without the hassle of the usual hosting service.
http://exadeci.com/outerra
As of now Ajaxplorer doesn't natively support users registeration without a CMS so I may create a registeration form but meanwhile you can contact me and I will create you an account asap.
You can upload otx, zip, rar and 7z files up to 64M (hosting restriction) it should be enough for most cases except some high res textures.
You can share folders http://exadeci.com/outerra/data/public/3ab989.php that support "Download All" files
or share files directly with a link and I won't delete them and they won't expire (as long as they are Outerra related) you manage your own files.

The models I took to illustrate the folder are:

That is neat, but I think that it would be good to have some sort of preview (just some screenshots) so the user can see what he will download.

Just my point.

You could add images with the same name and order by name but if this get popular it might be possible to edit Ajaxplorer code to use a preview from the otx

Perhaps a jimdo page with product pages for each mod and a link to the site above.

I was just thinking about users posting their mods on the forum like they already do and then share them with it

No, your idea is good. I`m just giving out some suggestions. Who knows, maybe there will be an official Mod site, that can be accesed through Outerra.

I was thinking about adding the ability to export models from OT directly to our server (as otx files), and then providing functions to install them automatically in OT. We could make a simple web page for browsing the mods that would open inside OT, but it would be best if the whole back-end was simply done as a web service. Then someone else could make mod pages, organizing the content and providing search functions etc etc. These pages can be opened from within OT, and the installation of a selected model would be done simply via a javascript call to our API.

How would the models be previewed? Would you need to upload a screenshot or would it generate one automatically? OR and this would be amazing would you get a 3D shopping mall that you could walk around.. See a screenshot on a shelf and preview it in full size in the store.

Think about shopping for a car in an actual car dealership.

Initially I thought just about a common automated mechanism how to distribute the mods and to find & install them without having to package-upload-find-download-install them manually, in a web page.

But the next stage would be a shopping mall, or an exhibition site, that would allow people to preview stuff in 3D. This would allow also a commercial usage, we've already got some inquiries about how the simulation devs could be making payware content for the OT world.

Great, the click and install from Outerra sounds perfekt.
But important: It has to be possible do install whole areas by one click.
In XPlane many many airports are out there in the web but I have do download all of them seperately.

@exadeci: You sayed it would be possible to download whole areas?

Oh, I forgot about that. Is it able to handle .otx files though?

EDIT: Scratch that. Users can preview that model in its original format (collada, 3DS...) and then download it as an .otx if they like it. That would work nicely.
