nice experiment: so bathymetry seems realistic in outerra.
Unfortunately lights do not illuminate terrain when underwater so the ocean depths forever remain in the dark in outerra and our wanna be Cousteau's have a hard time

but also his sub just does only illuminate underwater Objects ! not underwater terrain ...at least in this video. That is a limitation of outerra engine ..not of the mods

adding color as it is in reality, especially in well-known natural spaces ... would give outerra a lot of life and added value.
An example

I suspect this would require outerra to adopt actual photoreal textures instead of procedural coloring of terrain. Since the terrain is already based on real elevations this would then make it a copy of MS2020 flightsim.
Besides the question wether this would be desirable or not (it will require the devs to own and host terrabytes of photoreal terrain texturedata and the users to download it)  the other question is how would they match grass and trees to the photoreal terrain textures ?
It would be quite difficult to match procedural vegetation to photoreal textures. Also the realworld distribution of grass and trees (not mentioning bushes etc..) occurs at much higher resolution than in outerra's present procedural terrain. Also the tree images as well as building images would need to be cancelled from the satellite imagery otherwise you'd have 3D trees and 3D houses sitting on top of 2D tree and house images. ..which looks really bad.
So I think such realworld terrain texture will never happen in outerra. For that there is already MS2020.
The only possibility I see is that users are given the ability to locally "glue" photoreal textures to the terrain as mods. Something like this was shown in one of the TitanIM videos...so this might be possible and hopefully happen sooner or later for us. Still it would make sense only where there is no grass ,unless we are also given the ability to plant procedural grass locally in outerra on top of photoreal textures.

Well actually the high resolution image and elevation inserts down to 15 cm (so quite close to photoreal) is a thing that was planned in outerra according to cameni's last outerra preview video (in 2019)..so its already invented...just we don't have access to it (yet  :'()
Have a look at his video from 5:22 onwards ...lovely !

great video ,,
. .. when I commented about the colors of the Danxia reliefs (Zhangye Danxia - China) I did not refer to buildings but to relief and I commented on it because we have seen it in outerra .. I will put a 2020 video where you can see those beautiful colors, that We do not know if they are due to an error or rather to a blessed error, because they are not seen in outerra, only in some small places.

I think its just an error of outerra, especially if those colors are not actually there in the real world

if it's a mistake, let's do controlled detonation. :)
we could make a voluntary mistake in the relief of the mountains of Zhangye Danxia - China ... it would be a precious mistake.. :) :)

Nota:the new world was discovered because at that time everyone was looking for spices, looking to flavor food ... I imagine that in the new world of outerra, we will have to explore it and find the colors ...
