Outerra on a 1080Gtx at 4.8Ghz
« on: July 10, 2016, 12:17:13 pm »

Just finished assembling my new computer and have some preliminary results.

Outerra on the machine specified in the thread title does over 400Fps at all default settings.

At nearly maxed 960p Terrain quality metrics and AA at 4x I get approx 200 FPS dropping as low as 175pfs depending on whats happening. I could probably gain more at low levels by turning down the grass settings, but why bother?

Shadows are at max, tree rendering range maxed, Resolution 1920 x 1080@60.

Newest drivers show no graphical errors (runways and roads are fine, trees are not purple.

Only consistent problem is that Outerra crashes (always!) on exit, now.

LOL! I haven't felt the need to update at all in the last few years, but Outerra and a few other programs convinced me that now was the time. I'm very happy so far!

You should submit performance benchmark test results for your rig

The links to those tests are deader than the Dodo.......

Interestingly, GPU load while Outerra is running nearly maxed, is only about 38%

AMD RX 480 continues to show a curious jump in performance above 5k triangles. Note this isn't very good as it means that small meshes are slow, and there's plenty of them in OT. That effect is visible in all cards except for 1080GTX which saturates quickly at 40 triangle meshes, but in case of newer AMD architectures the jump is almost 2x.

This is significant for almost all our procedurally generated content, and will require specific optimizations.

Grass test pushes the card to max because of two-sided rendering, and the same effect is visible there as well. What's interesting is that RX480 no longer loses performance on larger meshes, albeit it's of limited use.

However, in perf per dollar comparison, NV 960 is still ahead of anything else:

Yup, I was surprised that the grass was still sucking so many frames. Decided to put grass on low settings, as it wasn't really worth the cost (to me) unless I'm driving or running.

I also eventually decided to turn off shadows. The GPU has no problem with them, but right now they can be pretty vague/shimmery/diffuse at the edges, and can undermine the realism of the rest of the scene when so much shimmering is happening.

I wonder if there could be a sharper shadow setting for higher end GPU's..........?

More info: The new Nvidia anti-aliasing mode (well, new for me) Multi-frame sampled AA (MFAA) does work very well with Outerra, and gives significantly enhanced frame-rate. (300fps at 960p terrain quality metrics with 4x MFAA anti-aliasing set from the nvidia control panel and Outerra internal settings disabled)

When used in combination with the Nvidia anti-aliasing mode "Enhance the application setting" there are no problems. However, when using the setting "Override any application setting" a diagonal black line appears across the Outerra UI (Though the game itself is fine)

Still experimenting.

This is truly a weak point: the shimmery (tree) shadow rendering with lod borders. Hoping for a better implementation.
