'Natural' roads and paths
« on: February 28, 2013, 11:26:34 am »

I looked around and didn’t see this idea mentioned anywhere:

Would it be possible to pick two points in a landscape, and have the engine calculate and generate the most likely road or path between them? Not the quickest or straightest, but simply the most natural road or path, given the surroundings like hills and rivers and what not, as if it were the result of people sensibly travelling between those two points for decades or even centuries.

It would need to keep the slope in check by winding a path in high mountain situations..

Not as easy as you would thing.

Now there's a mountain road – good grief!

But for less extreme environments, I'd wager it would be possible to calculate a route where elevation differences and distance and such are all minimised.
