Many Many Questions regarding Outerra: Anteworld
« on: September 25, 2014, 04:56:01 am »

Hey guys, i have some questions and i hope you can help me. I have already found some threads that answer a few of my questions but not all of them - so here i go.

1. When i spawn any vehicle i am in it right away with the engine already running. how can spawn a vehicle in front of me without a running engine?

2. i was flying in a MIG yesterday, and thought it would be a funny idea to fly close to the ground. I then noticed that the MIG is really really really slow. Is this normal? This cant be "normal" MIG Speed - it should be up to around 2.445 km/h.. But even though i have full throttle i am moving Forward really really slow. am i doing something wrong? or is it just the way the game simulates flying right now?

Also i was wondering about the "physics". When i spawn a aircraft for example it bounces around wierdly. Is it normal for this Version or do i have to activate something?

3. When im flying with my HOTAS in any aircraft: if i am not touching anything on the stick my aircraft goes slightly up. Its as if my HOTAS was not calibrated correctly for the game. I always have to steer a little bit against that or else i am suddenly flying straight up if i dont pay Attention. i found a manual calibration option, but clicking it does not do anything it seems (just nothing happens).

4. how do i add my own Locations so i can spawn there? Do i really always have to fly there / search it for myself? And how can i move "faster" than normal (i read someone here posting about 1000 mph - i am NEVER that fast (at least it does not feel that fast)

5. Pressing "g" does nothing for me - i see no Google map overlay :-/

6. when im flying with the MIG and it gets nighttime - there seems to be a "cutoff" at the horizon where no more landscape is rendered. its just a black "cut" in the landscape with strange lightbulbs floating upwards. What is this? is this some kind of wrong setting on my side?

7. is there any easy way to implement new vehicles/locations with the normal full version (no developer version thingy). Or do i have to copy them to the correct folders.

I understand these are a lot of questions. I had a hard time finding answers to a lot of my other questions as well - sadly there is no real "FAQ" for Ingame-Questions thread. I have found an FAQ in the wiki but it does only cover a little tiny bit of possible ingame questions... maybe its a good idea to get a real FAQ going where lots of the "noobie" questions are answered. the game is sadly not yet self-explanatory at all

Thank you guys in advance for your Kind help :) i really appreciate all the answers i can get

Hi tschief.

4. how do i add my own Locations so i can spawn there? Do i really always have to fly there / search it for myself? And how can i move "faster" than normal (i read someone here posting about 1000 mph - i am NEVER that fast (at least it does not feel that fast)
- To save your own locations, just go to the place you want to save, then click on Locations(or F2). Enter the name of the new location(at the bottom of that windows), then press Save. The location will be added on that list. Use Load to go to the selected location.

- To alter the speed (or move faster), use PageUp and PageDown (configurable from Controls menu). You can use your mouse wheel as well.

5. Pressing "g" does nothing for me - i see no Google map overlay :-/
G - Google maps (configurable from Controls menu).
M - Open Street Maps (configurable from Controls menu).

CTRL+SHIFT+G - Google maps overlay.
CTRL+SHIFT+M - Open Street Maps overlay.

Hey guys, i have some questions and i hope you can help me. I have already found some threads that answer a few of my questions but not all of them - so here i go.

1. When i spawn any vehicle i am in it right away with the engine already running. how can spawn a vehicle in front of me without a running engine?
You can use the buildings menu, find the vehicule in it and spawn it. The vehicule will spawn where the little cross is on your screen, you can move it by clicking somewhere else. You can also use the "u" key to spawn a vehicule permanantly (will not desapear if you quit the game).

2. i was flying in a MIG yesterday, and thought it would be a funny idea to fly close to the ground.

It's strange, the Mig is really fast. Can you check your speed using the HUD? (Tab key)

6. when im flying with the MIG and it gets nighttime - there seems to be a "cutoff" at the horizon where no more landscape is rendered. its just a black "cut" in the landscape with strange lightbulbs floating upwards. What is this? is this some kind of wrong setting on my side?

This is weird too. What are your PC specs? This could be related to a strange atmospheric setting, but I don't think you have modified it. Could be outdated drivers.

7. is there any easy way to implement new vehicles/locations with the normal full version (no developer version thingy). Or do i have to copy them to the correct folders.

Most of the vehicules buildings posted in these forums use the .otx format. You just have to click on the file (wich will normaly open with outerra) and the vehicule will be automaticly installed in the correct location.

if any part of the Mig touches the ground it'll drag through the terrain as there aren't proper collisions yet.

2.  You won't be able to reach maximum speed near sea level altitude because the air is much too dense and drag is very high at supersonic speeds.  The quote maximum speeds are probably quoted for 30-50k ft altitude.  Also, the HUD gives calibrated air speed (CAS), not True Air speed (TAS), so air density affects the reading.  If you go high enough in altitude, your HUD speed will read zero, even though you are traveling at orbital velocities.

3.  Depending on which aircraft you are flying, the aerodynamic and engine forces and moments can reduce aircraft static stability, meaning continuous adjustments are needed by the pilot to keep the aircraft level and flying straight.  For example, the cessna, especially at high engine RPM will have large torque moments attempting to roll the aircraft.  P factor is also modeled, but I'm not sure about prop wash slipstream affecting the vertical tail.  In any case, be sure to continuously trim your aircraft in the pitch and roll axes every time you change speed, altitude, or throttle setting.

Hey Acetone

Thank you for your Kind reply.

It's strange, the Mig is really fast. Can you check your speed using the HUD? (Tab key)

Yes, i will do that tonight. When i was flying close to the ground/forest the trees passed by really slow.. I will try that with the TAB tonight and post whatever i find out here. Thanks!

This is weird too. What are your PC specs? This could be related to a strange atmospheric setting, but I don't think you have modified it. Could be outdated drivers.

Well i just updated the graphic card drivers, but when i did so i did not uninstall the old ones correctly. Maybe that leads to that Problem. Also: I am playing with the oculus rift - could that be an issue?

I will post a screenshot tonight when i return home to play a bit of Outerra

Most of the vehicules buildings posted in these forums use the .otx format. You just have to click on the file (wich will normaly open with outerra) and the vehicule will be automaticly installed in the correct location.

Ok. I was not so far as downloading any stuff yet, but before i do so tonight i wanted to know how it works.

@zzz
yes, I was close to the ground, but it was at a place where everything was completely (really completely ^^) flat.. it looked like a desert or something (maybe it was water - Oculus Rift has such low resolution and it was getting dark just then) and it was near one of the Default Airports. after a few minutes there was a forest approaching, i turned a bit and was flying besides it (still on the flat ground). It seemed really slow..

I guess i'll find that location again. maybe i'll post a video if the checking the HUD with "TAB" tip does not help.

Thank you guys very much.

Your explanations are pretty interesting to read through. Thank you :-)

That makes sense. So to reach "full" speed with the MIG i should go really high up. Im still not sure if the speed at low altitude level is correct as it was "feeling" really really slow.

For example fyling over an airport took quite some time and when i sometimes accidentally exit the aircraft it flies away from me really slow. If i should make an estimate i guess its something around maybe 150-200 km/h max. But thats all just guessing. I will check it again tonight

Edit:
Is there any possibility to check the TAS instead of CAS? I guess if the air density affects the reading with CAS the HUD will not be very informative for me, as i am no aircraft expert!

I'm not sure it could be that, but when your terrain problem happen, is there a small update bar at the bottom of your screen ? Outerra download pieces of the dataset as you move close to them and the terrain can look really flat and ugly when it's not 100% complete. You can download the full dataset http://forum.outerra.com/index.php?topic=2396.0]here[/url] if needed.

I already saw some terrain dataset Downloads ingame and they looked different than this. the Problem also only appears at night - as soon as nighttime approaches the landscape gets cutoff - its really a strange effect. I guess its the best thing to post a screenshot here and also try to download the full dataset.

I saw the full download of the dataset already, but sadly the torrents are not working anymore. i didnt try the normal downloads though, i hope they'll work =D

Edit:
More strange than the "cutoff" of the landscape (it is not looking that bad) are the upwards floating light bulbs.. they start appearing as soon as the stars appear on the sky

That's so strange that the torrent link is not working. People were downloading it from me not all that long ago.

Here is a screenshot from the strange visual thing i get to see on the horizon when it darkens.

Also you see the speed i am at at that moment.. that was the fastest i could get =)

It's the shadow of the earth on the atmosphere you see here :)
A screenshot in a larger resolution make it more obvious :

The result is weird because of the rift (it's a DK1 isn't-it?) crappy resolution.
The Mig speed seems fine for me, but I'm not really an flight model specialist.

The max speed of an aircraft isn't down low as the atmosphere is too thick. The max speed of a Mig 29 at sea level is ~ 1500 km/h. Even though its absolute max speed is ~ 2,450 km/h, this will be achieved at a much higher altitude where the aircraft isn't trying to cut through dense air.

In regards to your control problem, this is what 'trim' is designed to counteract- By trimming the aircraft, you should be able to fly 'hands off' but the amount of trim required changes depending on a lot of factors so it also needs to be adjusted as you fly/change airspeed/configuration etc.

Edit- Whoops, late to the party!

No, it actually is a DK2, so the Resolution is 1920x1080. :-) Close guess :-P

Its not the same effect as in your Picture. Its kind of hard to see in my screenshot, i see that now.

I first tried to upload it, it was to big too upload it so i made it smaller by 50% and then i noticed that the screenshot has the usual two same looking sides (one for each eye in the oculus rift), so i cut off the other side. And now the screenshot is WAY to small :(. I will try to make a better one tonight when im not in a plane but freefloating and also without an Oculus Rift :-).

@Timmo
Thanks for your Information, actually thats quite helpful for me. Its a different kind of Information that has not been shared yet in my thread. Is it correct that what i see on the right middle side on my screenshot is my Speed? That was the most i could get - mostly i was between 300-400. Yeah, im not really really high up but it still seems a bit slow to me - maybe something around 1000 should be more realistic :-) But hey, im learning something about aircrafts here - that cant be bad  ;D

Your picture shows your speed as 649 Knots, which translates to almost 747 Miles per hour........
