I get a crash to desktop when copying the files in to the earth folder. do all the files need to be there, so, wait until the download is finished? OR should i be able to copy wad files that have downloaded already?

You are getting crashes because the files are corrupted, not finished downloads.

OK thanks. I was patient and all finished downloading and working now. One thing though, there are elevation anomalies (as one may come to expect) I suppose the best place to note these are in the terrain issues section.

Yep!  Be sure to hit the TAB key before submitting the screenshot, so the location is recorded.

Cameni,

I am wondering can you tell me what source Outerra terrain data is used from?

Is it SRTM or another? And, will you be updating the terrain with new data at any stage?

Thanks

Since I've been in alpha/beta (a month or two before anyone else :P) the terrain, I think, has undergone 2 revisions, possibly 3 ... Cameni can correct me on that.

The good thing about the terrain data is that when new data comes in with higher resolution, it can be updated almost seamlessly.  Some of the roads/airports etc may need modifications from time to time, but that's a minor nuissance, and something I'm sure the Dynamic Duo can figure out for future modifications.

SRTM and ViewfinderPanoramas for some parts. Shame Aster is not usable yet.

We'll be updating the data, there are plenty of bugs on terrain, shores and elsewhere.

maybe you can make a bit of code that detects these bugged terrain and reports it in a fashion so its easier to find. You could even have it repair the terrain faults.

Just a thought, as it may make a mission manually finding and editing every terrain hickup.

one thought that was noted earlier was a mechanism to detect terrain higher than the highest point in a given area which would find all those really ugly staglitite type looking mountains. This also could be the reverse when looking for terrain that is inaccurately lower than what it should show.

While I think of it, Cameni/Angry Pig when would we know when a newer piece of terrain data is available? Will we be notified with a download link or will we need to keep coming to the forum and randomly finding this data?

I'll surely put a notice about a new terrain processing run. Otherwise, you'll see it downloading new terrain description files. Normally it just skims fast over these when checking if there are newer versions on the server.
