(Release) 4Runner exploration vehicle
« on: October 14, 2014, 11:42:06 pm »

I've recently come across the Outerra engine and so far it has turned out to be the best 4x4/wheeling simulator I've found. I had tried a number of different 'off road' style games in the past but none of them really did it for me, Outerra on the other hand has had me virtual wheeling for hours!

I tried importing a sketchup model of my real world truck to play with, and it turned out to be pretty easy. Here it is attached for your enjoyment.

You can see some shots of the real thing at http://www.vioffroad.com/forum/members-rides/theshanergys-97-toyota-4runner Scroll to the bottom for the most recent shots ..the pics are still a bit out of date right now, so the model is actually closer to reality :)

I took the engine force js hack and sound files from another model, but now can't remember which one it was. If anyone happens to know the source let me know and I'll update this post with credit. I also went ahead and added some basic transfer case controls. Shift up/down and you will go between 2HI > 4HI > 4LO. There's also a little something extra hidden in there (doughnuts)!  8)

On to the goods:

Just to note, you'll need the console open "p" to see what gear you're in. Looking forward to the fading log for things like this.

Wow. Simply amazing work man. Gonna install this and try it out right now.

*Edit*

Wow. This thing is awesome. Climbs very well, and has a great top speed. Very well done. I am impressed.

UPDATE: The fixed position axles were really bugging me, so I've now added functional suspension for a more realistic effect. You can play with the suspension settings too if you want some crazy flex! Big thanks to PytonPago for the excellent Ural model which shed some light on how this is accomplished.

Looks really good. Maybe a bit too lenient on the COG. But otherwise an impressive display!

Thanks everyone!

Yea, I agree for sure. I had the cog higher originally, but I always ended up rolling on the rocks. So this is the cheaters solution! :) If I'm ever able to find a fix for the weird bounding box issues I'll crank it back up again. As it is now rolling often leads to shooting up into the air in full barrel roll or sinking through the ground.

I got most of these shots (all but the last) from Squamish BC, just across the valley from 'The Chief'. A great spot to hike/climb IRL. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stawamus_Chief

Really looking forward to higher resolution topography data for places like this.

Ah, cheers! This is also the ONE small vehicle that I haven't flipped while cornering. Every other car seems way too grippy on the cornering, and just flips when I try to turn it :p
Nice work on the handling, good sir!
