Volumetric clouds?
« on: March 02, 2012, 08:35:30 am »

Just wondering if clouds were close to the top of the to-do list or way down. They'll have a "global" effect on how the visuals look but would need some basic patterns programming as to how to behave over large bodies of water and traversing coastlines. And then there's God rays on top of that if you want it to look really accurate. Will you go straigh for volumetric or stick with 2D clouds for a while?

Volumetric.
Not sure about the priorities yet. We have looked at the existing solutions, but most of them turned out to be designed for the CPU, or limited in range of heights and distances. Because of our lighting it would be probably hard to fit anyway.

We need to make a few tests, but I believe we can reuse a lot of our fractal and terrain technology for the clouds ..

That sounds great. I just checked out Nuaj volumetric clouds. Something like this in outerra would be awesome!

Woaaaahhhh.... That's gotta be the new best volumetric one I've seen.

(Of course the ground looks like crap, but that's not the point of it.  :P)

Is there a weather engine planned to take care of the weather, or just a selective pre-set of weather (FSX like weather)?

Many things to do.  :-X

It would be so awesome if Outerra had the capability to create quality high definition clouds like REX does for FSX! Does anyone know if this is planned or not?

REX clouds, and any FSX cloud is basicaly a 2D image of a real cloud, rotating to face the player, exactly how current Outerra trees are. Outerra clouds on the other hand will be volumetric, which means that they will actually have mass.
So Outerra will not only have REX quality clouds, but even better. 8)
