@cameni: Great to see an Outerra developer chiming in with an accurate comparison! In case you're interested, here's the exact latitude/longitude/altitude/pitch/bank/heading that I used:

Latitude: N47° 15' 27.39"
Longitude: E11° 17' 19.48"
Altitude: 3679.48 feet
Pitch: -12.660052739847529
Bank: 11.21676821280645
Heading: 96.820694389293521

I'm not sure if it's of any use, but the visibility was set to 20SM (statute miles) in my shots (and appears to be same in the DFS one). Also, the date/time was: May 5, 2016 @ 07:08:29 local time.

Ah, that would have helped. Except for visibility, there's no artificial visibility limiter in OT.
I only roughly estimated the date by the position of the sun.

But I'm also guilty of not crediting properly: the camera position and fov settings were kindly provided by KW71 who nudged me that I should post some comparisons with the new dataset.

... and the best looking is ... : Outerra(30m) !!
When will we get our hands on it? Educated guess please.

We are doing final testing and fixing stuff now for the release of it (among with other stuff). Week(s).

30m dataset

For me the best image for the matter of this comparisson is the first one. And if you can do the trick for be in a point where the trees shadows are full, then even better.
The 30m dataset result is PURE LOVE!! Mountains profile are radically improved (i was surprised about how much they are, in this image can see very clear).

For my opinion, your picture is the total winner compared with all the others engines. Its almost REAL. And this, taking in account Outerra engine strong point, where no other global engine can compete, is when you go down to the floor..

What i just miss is a bit more color (saturation), and a little bit more blue.  Adding it in photoshop end up in a literally real picture.

That's great news. I've not kept up with Outerra recently, but it's always exciting looking at the changes being made. While I'm not a programmer, what goes into a graphics engine really intrigues me.

Wow......

19 years old... member since 2011.... 3 posts...

Nothing personal....

Yeah, I've also been a member of AVSIM since 2010 and have over 1,400 posts there. I just don't come here much as most of my forum browsing is flight sim-related because of my development work.

I only requested credit. That's all. I know Devon (HiFlyer) from his posts on AVSIM over the years and I'm aware he meant no harm - he's a nice guy. Let's move on, shall we?

What's the location? :)

Unknown location using FSX and Tileproxy. I bumped into the picture on Imgur, but now I've tracked it further and asked the poster for more definite info.  https://www.reddit.com/r/flightsim/comments/4ax141/birdseye_view/

Cool, thanks! Never heard of Tileproxy before.
That's a really clever solution for good (and free) quality photoscenery. Not really legal, however. Same problem as usual, eat a metric ton of memory (using a SSD just for that, seriously?) and look bad from close distance, but for a free solution, it's a really nice result :)

I love the new rain effect, but I think it may be a bit too subtle. Its very hard to see unless you are standing nearly motionless. When moving fast or from a plane, in the air, its pretty much invisible. Which started be thinking about how others have approached depicting rain.

Someday.........

In the meanwhile, heres some aviation special FX porn!  =D
